“Beauty Is In The Eyes Of The Beholder” is A dance theatre performance reflecting the social values associated with beauty. The performance attempts to highlight the effects of various social systems upon individuals and the resulting behaviour. Institutions such as social media, product manufacturers, and mainstream media, design and define standards of beauty which generations of people adhere to. these unreachable standards potentially lead to the creation of obsessive behaviour and an acceptance toward people being becoming cast to these standards, to being removed from that which they are, to becoming and being reduced to forms other than what they are or inherently have been born as. It is a performance which reflects how individuals have been dis-engendered from their own bodies, form their own characters, and have willingly succumbed to the aspect that they should fit, should become something other than what they are. The yellow skin of Asians bleached white, burnt until it has become frail and weak, noses reshaped to become delicate and angular, eyes mutated into wide distorted objects and their colours changed. We ask the questions about the origins of this development, what has these developments meant for the people, how have they been affected, and how people related to others – the object and the viewer.
