The documentary “Lillian Smith: Breaking the Silence”

December 14

Followed by a talk-back with director Hal Jacobs, on December 14, 2019, at 6 p.m. The 2019 documentary (52 min.) tells the story of the American writer/activist who received national attention in the 1940s-1950s as a prominent southern white author speaking out against segregation and white supremacy.

A friend of Eleanor Roosevelt and Martin Luther King, Jr., she was on the bleeding edge of social change in postwar America. Despite receiving threats of violence and being silenced by newspaper editors, she became the conscience — the moral compass — of the southern U.S. until her untimely death from cancer in 1966.
