Artist Bio:
Joanna Berg got her degree as a graduate of cultural studies program at the University of Warsaw. She then goes on to study photography at University of the Arts in Poznan, Poland.

She took a series of photographs for her graduation project that she named “No Tears for Queers”. In the series, she’s interested in socially engaged art, specifically aiming to bring out the topic of body-image, and gender identity to the public eye.

As part of the project, she photographs people from LGBTQ communities. Each and every person, depicted in her photos, has some experience of being queer, of growing up in a world of violence, non-acceptance and rejection; where their identities don’t conform to the so-called ‘social norm’. Their stories of fear and violence are also their manifesto of freedom and courage.

About the project:
Fear, suffering and anxiety are the emotions that most LGBTQ people experience. Many of them were bullied in schools and suffered with long term feelings of loneliness. As adults, they often hide their identities from their parents, fearing disapproval. Those who come from religious up-bringings suffer by being rejected from their church/community, despite being told that God is loving and merciful. Moreover, their country political climates can also inflict changes to their private lives – that is why many emigrate to countries where non-heteronormative individuals can live freely as who they are. It is often a search for a safer space.

All of the photo sessions took place in a photo studio where they can feel safe and comfortable. The mediums are lights, colors and their bare bodies. There are no set designs, nor unnecessary elements. These people were asked to be unclothed as clothing can be a form of armour. They were asked to be vulnerable and reveal their true, raw, and authentic selves.

Culture imprints in us, like a form in sand. It shapes our gender expression, our social hierarchies, and marks what is beyond the norms. But identity is not always obvious at first sight. A piece of document or clothing does not always reveal one’s true identity. It’s easy to hide, push aside, and pretend like it doesn’t exist, especially when it goes beyond the social norm. “No Tears For Queers” pushes the issue of identity to the forefront and forces people to think about it. It is also a story about restoring a sense of one’s pride, fighting for their freedom and their autonomy. Photographing them naked is an attempt to reverse the injustice being done to them and take control of their own identity. The photographer firmly believes that how we treat people can tell a lot about where we are going as a society. She also remixes classic photos that we all know (but often are unrecognizable in their purest form) with queer symbols.

NO TEARS FOR QUEERS
