Remembrance Day at Foreign Cemetery

Remembrance Day at the Chiang Mai Foreign Cemetery, organized by the Royal British Legion, including the U.S. Consul General Jennifer A. Harhigh, the Indian Consul Mr Shirish Jain, the British Honorary Consul Ben Svasti Thomson and the Portuguese Honorary Consul Nuno Caldeira da Silva. Many local schools attended the Remembrance Day, including Chiang Mai International School, Lanna International School,  Prem Tinsulanonda International School , Sacred heart School,  Varee International School. The children were given a guided tour of the Chiang Mai Foreign Cemetery (founded 1898) and historical graves by Lt.Col.Ron Rae, Secretary, Chiang Mai Foreign Cemetery followed by a talk on Battle of Somme and importance of the Remembrance Day message by Trevor Dobson, Chairman of Royal British Legion Sub-Branch. This year is the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, fought in northern France and was one of the bloodiest of World War One. Five months the British and French armies fought the Germans in a battle of attrition on a 15 mile front. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and many of the local expat communities joined this wet Remembrance Day. It was followed by refreshments at the Chiang Mai Gymkhana Club, laid on courtesy of the British Embassy
