Yingluck Dissolves Parliament – New Elections on the Horizon

CityNews – Anti-government protesters seem to have cornered Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who has stated in a nationwide televised address that she plans to dissolve the lower house of Parliament in an effort to soothe the country’s intensifying political crisis.

She also stated that because of this dissolution, national elections would have to be held, which she hopes will return power to the people as they have demanded. “The Thai people will decide.” She said.

Although the protests simmered down over HM the King’s birthday on 5th December last week, thousands of people have been taking to streets over the weekend to show their disapproval of the Thai government.

Opposition leader Suthep Thaugsuban said he would not call for an end to the demonstrations, and would continue to march to Government House in Bangkok, with as many as 50,000 protesters. His reasoning is “We have not yet reached our goal. The dissolving of parliament is not our aim.”

The 500-member House of Representatives now holds only 347 members, after the Democrat Party members gave up their seats last week. They said they couldn’t work with Yingluck or her Puea Thai Party any longer.

The resigning of all opposition party members seemed to be the final straw for Yingluck, who promptly called for a House dissolution and hold a national election within 60 days.
