CityNews – On 19th September at noon 2,000 FTA Watch members, who were wearing orange T-shirts with the slogan: “Life is not for sale. IPR out of FTA” and holding posters saying things like “Europe, hands off our medicine”, walked from Thapae Gate to Le Meridien Hotel where the FTA meeting took place.

The police stopped them at Centara Duang Tawan intersection before they reached Le Meridien Hotel. The activists then requested to see both Thai and EU representatives to hand in their request letter.

At 1.30 p.m. Akkared Saikrajang, President of Thailand Trade Representative Advisor, Office of Thailand Trade Representative; and Mr. Antonio Berenguer, Head of Trade and Economic Affair, EU delegation in Thailand, came to meet the protesters. He assured people that he would be very careful and keep the nation’s benefits at heart.

Dr. Olarn Chaipravat, chief of the Thai delegates, added that “We are concerned about the public’s health benefits. The negotiations will not be held outside the Trips framework. The EU understands our concerns and insists that the agreements will be based on mutual benefit.”
