Aram Kaweewong, a doctorate from Japan and lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering at Chiang Mai University, along with his wife of only 7 days, Ratchaya Tantranon, were on their honeymoon when disaster (literally) struck at the infamous Grand Canyon near viewpoint LeFevre Overlook. An American boy was also struck, but survived the incident.
A park ranger at the Grand Canyon Tourist Centre told the press that part of their responsibilities are informing tourists about precautionary tactics when a sudden storm hits; during thunderstorms tourists are warned to hide indoors or in their cars, and to avoid touching or standing near the steel handrails skirting the canyon.
Usually a rare phenomenon, the previous week four other tourists had sustained lightning bolt injuries, and according to The National Weather Service, already 14 people have died from the same ill-fate this year in Arizona and Florida.
