Two Cycling Lanes Already Being Abused

CityNews – May 14th, following the recent death of three cyclists, killed by a drunk driver earlier this month, there has been much talk of and raising awareness concerning safety for cyclists in Chiang Mai.

The Royal Highway Department has come out to announce that, following requests, it will open up two cycling lanes immediately. The first route from the intersection of Chiang Mai International Convention and Exhibition Center to The 700th Anniversary Stadium, and the second route (a continuation) is from the 700th Anniversary Stadium to Huay Tung Tao Reservoir.

The routes provides two lanes, for cycling and for exercising (walking and running).

The officials have set up concrete poles at the entrance and exist of the two routes so that other vehicles will stay away.

However, locals have already observed many motorcyclist using the lanes, causing dissatisfaction and complaints by cyclists.

Representatives of cycling groups have come out to ask the public to please respect their lanes and help them to stay safe.
