CityNews – Mae Hia Municipality Office will host the ancient and bloody worship ceremony ‘Pu Sae Ya Sae’ on 22nd June at a field near Wat Prathat Doikam in Mae Hia.

Tanawat Yodjai, the mayor of Mae Hia Municipality, revealed that the Pu Sae Ya Sae Ceremony has been held for centuries. He added that the ceremony is very important to the people of Mae Hia and surrounding area who benefit from propitiating the spirits of Pu Sae Ya Sae, spirits who protect the people and the forest.

If you’ve never seen the ceremony then be prepared for something unusual. A young man is chosen by the spirits who enter his body with the help of a shaman who smooths the passage. The possessed young man then starts to gnaw at and eat the raw carcass of a dead buffalo. When he’s done with the meat he drinks the blood of the animal.

In the past it’s believed that the giants Pu Sae and Ya Sae used to walk around the forest and mountains of Mae Hia and Doi Suthep. When they were hungry they would eat the local people. Fortunately Buddha was passing through the area one day and he had a word with the giants and asked them if they could perhaps stop cannibalizing the local folk. The giants agreed, and from then on once a year the people would offer a buffalo to the spirits.

The ceremony will start at 7.30 a.m. Drinks and snacks are available…if you feel like eating.
