Following days of heavy rains a total of six sections of the Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai road have been swept away. The six sections lie between kilometre markers 32 and 38 and caused total shutdown between 4pm and 9.30pm last night.

Governor of Chiang Mai Charoenrit Sanguansat inspected the area and talked to some of the 120 cars and 300 people stuck there at the time of his visit around 7pm.

There is now a bypass at the first broken section and three other sections will be fixed within the next two days. It is hoped that the road will be open as normal by the 4th August. For now it is best to take alternative routes and avoid the area all together.

As for the 300 people stuck there last night, the governor had arranged accommodation for them nearby along with water and food.
