The canal was around two metres deep and it took rescue officers around 30 minutes to retrieve the driver and all the passengers from the submerged vehicle.

All six people had already drowned in the water.

Four were identified as men from Lamphun’s Pa Sang district, aged between 23 and 24. However the remaining bodies have yet to be identified as they had no documents on them.

Police believe that they were traveling back from a graduation party in Chiang Mai and the driver most likely fell asleep, causing him to lose control of the pickup.

The bodies have been taken to Lamphun Hospital.
