CityNews – Durians are flooding the markets again this season producing a whopping 2-3 tonnes of waste each and every day.

Wisakha Panyachuay, Director of the Chiang Mai Municipality’s Sanitation Department, has announced that last year the municipality collected over 100 tonnes of durian waste, with some days collecting up to 8 tonnes from Chiang Mai’s markets. This year authorities will continue to use the waste to make compost and fertiliser to be distributed to local farmers. He says that the vast numbers consumed are unprecedented and mainly come from the rising popularity of durian amongst tourists.
