CityNews – Chiang Mai Irrigation has asked for cooperation from farmers after they plan to postponing the production and farming of logans through changes in the waterways in an effort to help farming in the dry seasons.
A survey was conducted in Gu Long, Saraphee, that several farmers had to invest large amounts of money in water-pumping machines because of a lack of natural water during the dry season.
If logan bushes are not properly hydrated, the fruit splits and often falls to the ground.
Sanay Namchan, the owner of a longan farm said that he and other orchardists faced problems of uncertainty in crop yield and the poor takings often affect the market costs of their fruit.
As a result of this research, Chiang Mai Irrigation has asked logan growers to begin cultivating their crops later in the year. This prevents the natural water in the Ping River being shared between fruit and rice plantations at certain times of the year resulting in more available water over a longer period of time.
The proposed farming months for logan farming are now during July and August.
