A meeting was held at the provincial hall this morning, led by
Governor of Chiang Mai Charoenrit Sanguansit. It was announced that Chiang Mai has weathered the worse of the pandemic and the governor congratulated all involved in their successful handling of the crisis.
According to the public health office, a total of 7,000 people were tested for the virus here in Chiang Mai, with only 41 being infected since the beginning of the year. There have been no new cases here in over a month.
While urging the public to maintain health and safety standards, the governor also announced that the tourism numbers have been of some concern. Between January and April a total of 2.15 million people visited Chiang Mai, down 41.16% from the same time period last year. Tourism revenue is also expected to have dropped by nearly 47% over the same period.
Recent indicators are good, however, with reports that shops, malls, markets and such venues are seeing an increase of business by 23%-39% over the past few weeks.
The governor urges us all to check in and out of all venues with the Thai Chana application and to maintain social distancing at all times.
