Wasapol Wongdeethai took his own life yesterday, his body discovered by his mother with whom he lived, next to a suicide note and potassium cyanide.
Wasapol had long suffered from stress and depression, having left his job as a lecturer at Maejo University before joining Citylife in 2018. Citing stress and depression, he resigned from his job as writer and translator in late 2019, though he kept in touch with Citylife and did a number of freelance jobs for us.
Just last week he was in touch with us to discuss some translation work which he had to outsource to us, during which time he told our production manager that work was causing him stress and that he was still not feeling any better. He said that he had been in Suan Prung hospital again, after many self-admits, but that he was still unwell.
A gentle man, a kind man, a helpful and considerate man filled with empathy and hard work, Wasapol, who was also a great lover of the English language, was sadly unable to overcome his mental illness and we are devastated to share this news. RIP.
