CityNews – 16th October 2019, Sudarat Sa-nguangsat, Chairperson of the Ministry of Interior’s Women’s Association (Chiang Mai) kicked off a dangerous waste management caravan. This new approach to waste management is being implemented by the Chiang Mai municipality in accordance with the policy of the ministry of interior which is focusing more on the environment, by applying reducing, separating, reusing and recycling methods to its waste management.
In an unrelated announcement, Chiang Mai Mayor Tassanai Buranupakorn said that the amount of the city’s waste was increasing year on year and is clearly affecting the ecosystem. He went on to say that this year the city produced 330 tonnes off solid waste per day and the municipality has been encouraging people to separate waste and to recycle. So far, 97 communities, with a total of 37 tonnes of waste, have been joining in the municipality’s dangerous waste separation project which was first implemented three years ago, and was an initiative of the mayor, and unrelated to the new initiative associated with the national agenda. The mayor went on to say that the amount of dangerous waste has clearly dropped in the past three years and the amount of toxins recyclers are exposed to has led to better quality of lives.
