They were there to worship and ask for blessings from a 500-year-old Buddha statue named after the venerable monk Tan Jai.

Among those making offerings at the temple behind Royal Park Rajapruek was Khankaew Intamul, 63, of Doi Lo district. She bought 10,000 jasmine garlands after winning 4 million baht in the lottery on September 1. She said the win came after she asked the Tan Jai Buddha statue for a blessing.

Other residents also claim to have won lottery prizes after praying to the statue, and many visit it the day before the winning numbers are announced. This has caused traffic jams up of to 2km long from the top of the mountain where the temple stands.
