A security guard at the building in Sirithorn Road in Chiang Mai’s Changpuak sub-district notified police on Sunday evening after hearing the woman argue with her boyfriend and noting that she had failed to emerge from the room after him. A toothbrush had been jammed in the outside lock, which was covered with a cloth.

The dead woman was identified as university student Patchareeya Khankam, 23, of Mae Ai’s Mae Na Wang sub-district. The name of her university has been withheld.

Police Colonel Somporn Panprom of Changpuak police station said on Wednesday that initial results from an autopsy showed she had died from hanging, although officers were still waiting for the results of toxicology tests.

Patchareeya’s boyfriend – a student whose first name is given as Noppadol – disappeared with her motorcycle on the day of the incident.

Police say there is evidence that Patchareeya’s death may not have been a suicide, and are treating it suspiciously.
