It is believed that the motorcycle rider, a well-known former racer, hit the woman as she crossed the road outside the Index Living Mall in Muang’s Nongpakrung sub-district.

Police were called to the scene at around 2.10am, along with a rescue team. They found the body of a woman, later identified as Kanchaporn Senakam, 18, of Muang’s Thasala sub-district.

The man, later identified as Pornthep Samma-ad, 21, of Sankamphaeng’s Sanklang sub-district, was severely injured. The rescue team carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but were unable to save his life.

His 1-million-baht Harley Davidson motorcycle was on fire in the road around 300m away. The officials had to use a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

No one witnessed the accident, although people nearby said they had informed the authorities after hearing the sound of a motorcycle being ridden at high speed and then crashing.

Pornthep was a famous racer, having won many motorcycle racing championships, police said.

The bodies were taken to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital for an autopsy. Their relatives have been informed.
