Doi Inthanon is Thailand’s highest peak, and the cool weather at this time of year attracts many domestic tourists.

Last Sunday the national park, in Chiang Mai’s Jomthong district, saw 3,420 visitors, officials said. Of these, 191 were foreigners and the rest Thai.

Park officials are preparing for more visitors this weekend, with many expected to stay overnight so they can watch the sunrise and experience the cold weather at dawn. Tourists have also been visiting other national parks in Chiang Mai province, such as Huai Nam Dang National Park in Mae Taeng district.

Temperatures are forecast to decline further from Sunday and the Northern Meteorological Center has warned residents of the north, especially those in mountainous areas, to prepare for the cold weather.

Residents and visitors are also urged to be careful when driving, as some areas have experienced thick fog.
