The move follows the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl on an overnight train from Surat Thani to Bangkok earlier this month. The case has sparked outrage and prompted calls for the alleged murderer, a State Railway of Thailand employee, to be executed.

SRT has announced that the special carriages will be a second-class air-conditioned car and a second-class sleeping car on certain trains serving three routes, including the northern route between the capital and Chiang Mai.

The others are the northeastern route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani and Nong Khai, and the southern route from Bangkok to Sungai Kolok.

Boys aged under 10 and no taller than 150cm can also travel on these coaches, SRT said.
