The boy said he had bought it from the owner of a noodle shop in downtown Chiang Mai, who police are now trying to trace.

It was an MK-II grenade, a type used by US forces in World War Two and later conflicts such as the Vietnam War.

Police had been told that the suspect, who comes from Chiang Rai and whose name is being withheld, had sold guns and bombs to his teenage friends. It is believed that he made these earlier bombs himself.

Officers arranged a sting operation, contacting the boy and asking to buy the grenade. It took more than a month until he agreed to do so and made an appointment to hand it over in the parking lot of Wat Ban Tho. He was then arrested and taken to Changpuek police station.
