In an attempt to revive the flagging tourism industry, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has teamed up with three major Thai insurance agencies to provide special coverage for foreign visitors.
Foreigners are facing issues buying travel insurance for Thailand because the country is currently under martial law, and the TAT hopes the new scheme aimed at travellers from Europe and America will offer a solution.
With a premium of 650 baht, the policy will feature 1 million baht of cover to include accidents, health problems, baggage loss or delay, and airport closure. Tourists can buy the policy online, or from overseas branches of the TAT, from July 15.
The president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, welcomed the move but said it was just one way to restore tourist confidence.
“I think government representatives should promote and convince tourists that Thailand is safe for them to visit,” he told the Bangkok Post.
