CityNews – Seven people have been sentenced by a Chiang Rai court-martial to six months in jail and a fine of 10,000 baht for protesting against the May 22 military coup, reports said yesterday.

As the defendants pleaded guilty, the sentences were halved and the jail terms suspended for one year, Prachathai reported.
It said the court delivered verdicts in two cases on Monday and Tuesday, involving protesters led by local red-shirt leaders Surirat Boonbuathong and Songsri Khomkam. They protested against the military coup at a McDonald’s restaurant in Chiang Rai’s Central Plaza on May 25, in parallel with protests in Bangkok.
The protesters were found guilty of breaching martial law by holding a public assembly of more than five people.
Another Chiang Rai red-shirt supporter, Sarawut Kulmaturapot, was earlier found guilty of the same charges and given a fine and suspended jail term.
