CityNews – Chiang Mai Mayor Tassanai Buranupakorn today led officials to examine the construction of condominiums and high-rise buildings in the municipal area following the collapse of a building in Pathum Thani that killed at least 10 and injured 25 others.

The aim was to make sure the new buildings are all up to standard and reassure residents that officials take the matter seriously.
There are currently 35 high-rise buildings, between 15 and 35 metres high, under construction in the municipal area, officials said. Every one will be examined, and so far officials have not found any problems.
However, concerns remain that in some areas developers can construct buildings up to 100 metres high, reports said.
A 33-storey building is scheduled for construction soon, Manager daily reported, and Tassanai said that although he doesn’t approve of it he can do nothing as it is within the law. In future he would like see a law controlling the height of all buildings in all areas, the report quoted him as saying.
