CityNews – Foreigners may be allowed to continue making regular visa runs, junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha said Friday, adding more confusion to an issue that has vexed many residents of northern Thailand.

In his weekly television address to the nation, Prayuth said foreigners who have to make regular visa runs can register with the Immigration Bureau, which will look for a way to solve the problem.

Prayuth said proposed changes to the visa system – under which it would no longer be possible to make back-to-back visa runs – had affected groups such as English teachers and academics, The Nation reported.

“So this is an ongoing problem that needs to be resolved, as it can lead to a shortage of English teachers and guides,” he said.

A spokeswoman for Chiang Mai immigration told CityNews that details were still unclear, and local officers would hold a meeting this week to discuss the latest developments.
