The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has backtracked on its decision to make all motorcycle taxi drivers wear green vests.

Motorcycle taxi drivers in Cha-am, Petchaburi Province.

They will now be allowed to continue wearing orange vests, with a luminous green strip and badges bearing the driver’s name and identification code stitched in.

These new jackets cannot be bought or sold illegally, said the commander of the First Infantry Division of the King’s Guard, Major-General Apiratch Kongsompong,

It was earlier announced that the orange vests would be replaced due to the association the colour has with local taxi mafias.

Motorcycle taxi drivers currently wear different coloured vests – typically orange, but also purple, pink, green and blue – depending on which district they are registered in.
