CityNews – Public health secretary Dr Narong Sahamethapat stated yesterday (19th June) that approximately 500,000 Thais are infected with HIV, yet only half of these have collected their positive results and entered treatment.

Speaking at a conference to promote the benefits of getting tested, he promoted a campaign run by the Public Health Ministry, which aims to prevent the spread of the disease.  The “Getting to Zero” campaign also attempts to sway public perception of sufferers, reducing fear and stigma.  The social exclusion experienced my many sufferers may be what leads so many to avoid collecting their results.

The treatments available are more accessible and affordable than ever before, however, and Dr Narong is encouraging people to come forwards and accept help.
