The incident happened at around 10am behind a restaurant in Mae Kha market. The dead man was later identified as Boonpeng Mong, 35, of Chai Prakarn district. He had been shot in the head.

Next to his body, police said, was a gun which Boonpeng had used to attack the officers. They also found around 94,000 yaba pills hidden in the boot of his car.

Narcotics Suppression Bureau officers had been tipped off by an informer that Boonpeng was a dealer who distributed drugs to other dealers in the area. They set up a sting operation, and sent a spy to meet him and buy 100,000 yaba pills.

But as they moved in to arrest him, police said, he shot at them and tried to escape. A three-minute gun battle ensued before he was shot dead.
