Police later identified him as 30-year-old Heng Luang, a Shan migrant who worked as a waiter at a Chiang Mai restaurant. Officers said he had been taking medication for a mental illness.

His colleagues told police that on Sunday evening Heng appeared nervous and was talking gibberish. Police believe he was hallucinating after taking too many tranquilisers, and took off his clothes before jumping into the river and drowning.

The body was found at around 5pm near the Ror 9 bridge in Changpuak sub-district. It was taken to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital for an autopsy.
