CityNews – Bangkok Airways has expanded its operations at Chiang Mai Airport, making it a new hub.

On Sunday the carrier, which already flew from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, launched four new services from Chiang Mai – to Phuket, Udon Thani, Mandalay and Yangon.
Ariya Prasarttong-Osoth, Bangkok Airways’ vice-president of sales, was quoted as saying that using Chiang Mai airport as another hub would enhance its ability to support the growing demand for air travel when the Asean Economic Community comes into effect in 2015.
“It will also allow us to provide better flight connections for our passengers who wish to continue their travel to the northeastern and southern part of Thailand as well as to the neighbouring country Myanmar without having to fly back to Suvarnabhumi Airport to connect to those destinations,” she said, according to Travel Daily Media.
Meanwhile, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai airports have been recognised for their efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
They were among four Thai airports to be presented with certificates at an Airports Council International (ACI) seminar in Bali last week. The others were Hat Yai and Bangkok’s Don Mueang.
ACI Asia-Pacific’s regional director, Patti Chau, congratulated Airports of Thailand for its efforts in carbon management and running the airports in an environmentally sustainable manner, the ACI’s magazine Airport World reported.
