CityNews – Chiang Mai Zoo on Sunday moved more than 10,000 fish in preparation for a major renovation of the freshwater part of its aquarium.

The 10 million baht renovation will begin this week and take around one year but the aquarium will still be open, reports say. The admission fee will be reduced from 290 baht to 200 baht while the work is being carried out.
The renovation work aims to improve the scenery in the six-year-old freshwater fish tunnel, creating a more natural look. The tunnel will also be raised so to ensure greater visibility of the tank’s floor, where many fish tend to hide.
The zoo’s freshwater fish have been moved to a reservoir in the zoo grounds and larger fish have been placed in tanks at Maejo University, reports said.
The president of Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium said it is currently home to more than 20,000 salt and freshwater fish, and requires more than 3,000 cubic metres of water. However, only the freshwater fish will be moved for construction.
The project will last around eight months and cost more than 10 million baht. The official opening of the new tunnel will take place in April 2015.
